Leaving Marrakech

Starting at the roundabout just the other side of the city wall from the landmark La Mamounia (for more information, click here), follow Boulevard El Yarmouk southward, keeping the ramparts on your left. In winter, and on clear days at other times of year, the panorama of the Atlas Mountains in front of you will confirm that you are heading in the right direction.

As you leave the city you’ll see the familiar picture-postcard shot of the 11th-century ramparts framed by date palms and the mountains. The route cuts across the flat and largely featureless Haouz Plain, on which wealthy Moroccans and foreigners have built lavish villas amid olive groves and fruit orchards. Such prosperity has also spawned numerous interior-design shops, garden centres and artisanal workshops, catering to the surge in demand created by the region’s ever-increasing number of riads and villas.
